truck from here, I knew it was near them. My heart started beating normally just then, for the first time since I left Grady early that morning.

I’d fished enough to know that it was too hot to catch anything this time of day, so I reeled in my line and lay back against the cool grass.

The cottonwood leaves fluttered in the wind like little scraps of crinkly paper. My eyelids fell, while a flood of random thoughts overtook me.

It was the first moment I’d had to really think about the longhaired man in Nelda’s yard and her secret stash of pictures.

I opened my eyes again and a day or a minute could have passed.

Only the sky, darkened into tufts of soggy clouds, betrayed the distinctive smell of night. Fishing pole on the grass by my side, I had now committed petty larceny, as the bait shop would have already closed.

The hot calm of mid-afternoon lifted into cool, angry gusts dragged across the flat prairie. Some kind of activity at the nearby clump of trees caught my periphery. I thought the small grove of Lacebark elms was half a mile away, but in the almost-darkness, it looked farther. The truck was beyond the fence by those trees, and I remembered the pitted earth and grates and crevices I’d jumped over to get to this spot.

Navigating back would be treacherous in the dark.

But I had bigger problems now.

I heard Blackie’s voice in that grove of trees up ahead of me.

Blackie? Out at night on the empty prairie near Comanche Creek?

What would he be doing here? Then again, what was the logic in anything Blackie Savage set his mind to? None, that’s what. If I thought of him like some omnipresent, Great White Shark of Oklahoma law enforcement, his behavior had a twisted sort of logic. A shark doesn’t think about things or agonize over every thought and try to project the potential consequences of its actions. It does one thing and it has perfected this singular behavior over 400 million years—it feeds. And in Blackie’s case, his own feeding frenzy entailed spreading bad energy and evil into every nook and crevice of Jefferson County.

With Mikey’s antique telescope I could see what he was doing over there in the last fragments of light glowing on the horizon. As I stood, I heard him yell some kind of clipped command. Was he talking to someone? Yelling at someone, or worse? I picked up the fishing pole, 131
